Muscular Dystrophy, is an umbrella term for a number of inherited disorders that cause the weakening of muscle tissue. The most common childhood form of Muscular Dystrophy is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which affects males, and progressively weakens muscles closest to the torso. It is estimated that twenty to thirty boys out of 100,000 born will be affected by Duchenne.
The cause of muscular dystrophies is unknown, however, it is known that all forms of Muscular Dystrophy are inherited genetic disorders, or genetic mutations. The conditions are not contagious.
