An Individualized Education Program, or IEP, is a plan developed and written so that you and each person working with your child knows what behavioral and or skill development goals have been set and how each service will help your child.
The following things are included in an IEP:
- Your child’s present level of educational performance, or PLEP statement, or a Present Level of Academic and Functional Performance, or PLAFP statement. This should include academic achievement, as well as motor skills, behavior and communication skills and how the child’s disability impacts or affects his participation in the general education curriculum.
- Eligibility for special education at those meetings when a Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team report is presented.
- A statement of measurable annual goals, including academic and functional goals designed to meet a child’s needs so that they may be involved and make progress in the general education curriculum.
- Short term objectives. These are specific steps chosen to help your child reach his or her annual goals.
- A description of how a child’s progress will be measured, when it will be measured and how often it will be reported and provided to the parents or guardians.
- A listing of special education and related services needed by your child, such as physical or speech therapy.
- Starting dates for the initiation of programs and services.
- The amount of time your child is able to participate in general education programs.
- Program and service options in terms of the least restrictive environment.
- Transitional needs if necessary. Transition refers to preparing a child to leave school and enter the adult world.
- State wide and district wide assessments in regards to participation and if the student is participating, what accommodations must be made available.
You must sign the initial IEP. You may sign the form at the end of the meeting, or take it home to study and review it. However, you must sign and return the IEP. If you don’t agree with it, there is a space to sign in disagreement.
