Michigan Arts Access

Very Special Arts Michigan is a state affiliate of Very Special Arts which is an international organization which promotes arts, education and creative expression, involving children and adults with disabilities.  Founded in 1974 by Jean Kennedy Smith, Very Special Arts is affiliated with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.

Since 1977, Very Special Arts Michigan has demonstrated the need for arts education, and has increased opportunities for experiences and training within educational and community programs for individuals with disabilities.  Activities in all arts disciplines include classes and workshops for children and adults conducted by professional artists and creative arts therapists, programs and resources within communities throughout the state, and information regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act.  From two original sites, Very Special Arts Michigan has grown to include more than 25 districts and local organizations statewide with programs conducted annually by a network of more than 100 volunteers.
